The Diviners

children away from home
want time
and place

next,
at the corner,
they walk ahead, leading
the March of Splendor

music to end music

the town will never be reality

up on the hill,
tall spruces stand,
dark angels, column after column

The Diviners is the first book I remember buying for myself after reading some Margaret Laurence in school. (She is assigned reading in Canada.) I loved this book. Recently I found the same edition from 40-some years ago at a second-hand store. I often write poems this way but seldom with such specific hermeneutics. – Pamela Hobart Carter
